What is Gynecomastia ?

Plastic surgery to correct gynecomastia is technically called reduction mammaplasty, and reduces breast size, flattening and enhancing the chest contours.

In severe cases of gynecomastia, the weight of excess breast tissue may cause the breasts to sag and stretch the areola (the dark skin surrounding the nipple). In these cases the position and size of the areola can be surgically improved and excess skin may be reduced.

What is Gynecomastia Surgery like?

If excess fatty and glandular tissue is the cause of the male breast enlargement, the surgery will seek to remedy this problem by cutting out the excess tissue with a scalpel and is usually followed by liposuction which involves the fatty cells being sucked out with small tubes inserted around the areola.

The surgery itself generally lasts an hour to an hour and a half and in most cases the patient will be out the door following the surgery. It is suggested that the patient then proceeds to walk around and stay active and to go back to work whenever he feels capable. It is, however, important to avoid exercise and strenuous activity involving the chest for 2-3 weeks following the surgery.

After about 3 weeks the patient should be feeling normal and able to continue their normal lives in hole. Some pains and loss of feeling has been known to occur for up to a year following the surgery in certain cases. For the most part, the surgery is quick and seamless with few side effects.

The Ideal Candidate for the Operation;

The treatment is recommended most for healthy, emotionally stable men. Elastic skin which will form to the body’s new contours is also something that is evaluated prior to surgery. Healthy men who have sought to correct the problem first with dieting and weight loss are the ones who are generally first considered for Gynecomastia surgery.

Obese or overweight men who have not first attempted to correct the condition with exercise and weight loss are discouraged as the condition may be able to be treated without surgery in these individuals. Also, those who drink alcoholic beverages in excess, smoke marijuana, or take anabolic steroids should first stop any of these actions prior to considering surgery since any of these can lead to Gynecomastia and the condition may reduce when the consumption of these drugs is ceased.
